The next morning, when they entered the dining room for breakfast, there was a gentleman sitting at the table whom Elizabeth did not know, but her husband did. “Good morning, Dr. Stewart. I wondered if you were in residence. May I introduce my bride, Lady Elizabeth Weatherstone? Lizzie, this is Dr. Graham Stewart, the resident physician at Pemberley. You will see a very healthy staff at Pemberley because of Dr. Stewart.”
“I am pleased to meet you, Dr. Stewart. I did not know large estates such as this had their own physician.”
“I believe Pemberley is rather unique in that sense,” replied Dr. Stewart. “My being here as a resident physician is a matter of chance, which I believe worked out well both for me and for Pemberley. Please get your breakfast, and when you are seated, I will tell you the circumstances.”
The top of the buffet in the dining room was filled with breads, fruits, cheeses, and meats, to which Elizabeth and Lord Weatherstone helped themselves. When they were seated, Dr. Stewart said, “I know Lord Weatherstone has heard my story, so I will give you the brief version and he can add anything else he thinks relevant. My wife died unexpectedly eight years ago and, although I was doing quite well as a physician in London, I could not stand the thought of staying in our townhouse without her. Therefore I started looking for another place to live. I happened to see Darcy’s father at our club, and when he heard my story, he asked me to come to Pemberley. He said he would enjoy my companionship and I could be the physician for Pemberley’s staff, farmhands, and tenants. He would provide me rooms for a clinic, a suite of my own, and whatever compensation I thought I should have above that. I agreed and we had two good years together until he died. When he died, I offered to leave, but Darcy and Georgiana, who had become like a son and daughter to me, would not hear of it, so here I am and likely to stay the rest of my life.”
“That does sound like a mutually beneficial bargain. I would guess, however, once your presence was known, the local doctor asked you to help him on some cases.”
“That is true, but Dr. Nystrom, the doctor in Lambton, is a very capable doctor, so I did reduce the number of his clientele. However, we get along well, and he bears me no animosity. He has sufficient work to keep him busy.” He then arose and said, “Now, I must go check on the patients in the clinic, and make my rounds. I will look forward to seeing you at lunch.”
When they had finished their breakfast, Mrs. Reynolds took them on the two hour tour of Pemberley. As she went through the house, Elizabeth was more and more impressed with its decor and its size. Elizabeth had expected any house Darcy owned to be very formal and uninviting, and discovered Pemberley to be the opposite of that.
